On Dec. 1st 2016, 33 nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties, including Uozu’s Tatemon Festival, were registered by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage under the title of “Yama, Hoko, and Yatai Float Festivals.”
The Tatemon Festival is one of the main events that takes place during the Jantokoi Festival. The “Tatemon” is a tall pole, approximately 16 meters in height, with over 90 paper lanterns hanging from it in a triangle-shaped arrangement. Below that, a picture frame is attached. The Tatemon is positioned on a 10-meter-tall, 5-ton sleigh platform. This boat-shaped “manto” float is then pulled around by roughly 80 people.

The sound of the taiko drums and flutes, and the vigorous shouts of the young men and women are also a must-see.

The origin of the Tatemon Festival can be traced back about 300 years ago, when the shrine parishioners prayed for a big catch of fish and safety at sea. Also, each neighborhood would hang paper lanterns from platforms and carry them around the area. Over time, the number of lanterns increased; by the Meiji Era, there were 25 lanterns, and at the beginning of the Taisho Era, there were 50 lanterns. The number of lanterns continued to increase until it became what it is today.

A smaller version is permanently exhibited at the Ariso Dome.

In 1955, at the Suwa Shrine, the sandy beach and sea could be seen right before your eyes. At that time, the Tatemon was said to have been pulled across that sandy beach, and that’s the reason for its sleigh platform. The Kamogawa River can be found on the southern side of the Suwa Shrine, and now, a narrow river also flows on the northern side. It is said that the townspeople would cross both sides of the river in order to perform the Tatemon ceremonial dance.

The most impressive part of the festival is the dynamic turning of the “tatemon” within the precincts of the Suwa Shrine.
Young people vigorously pull the wheel-less “tatemon” around.
TRIVIA

TRIVIA
Fireworks Display and UO!JAZZ Set!
On the second day of the Tatemon Festival, the Fireworks Display and the UO!JAZZ events will be happening. Both events are about a 10-min walk from Suwa Shrine. Get the most enjoyment by going to the Fireworks Display or the UO!JAZZ festival first, before going to the Tatemon Festival! The Fireworks Display starts at 19:40.

Volunteer Recruitment!
Every year, the Uozu City Board of Education recruits volunteers to pull the tatemon. This is your chance to experience this heroic festival! However, “be prepared for sore muscles!”

Demura
The direction of the tatemon for Suwa District 5 (formerly known as Demura) is different from the other six. The core pole, with Suwa Shrine written on it, is faced towards the sea, and the back of the pole without decorations is facing towards the shrine.
